Train Austria to Venice

Hi, y'all,

We are going to be in Zell Am See, Austria for a few days and then taking the train to Venice. When I look up fares on OEBB, I am directed to buy a ticket from Zell Am See to Villach Hbf. I will then have to buy a ticket from Villach Hbf to Venice St. Lucia, separately. I am ordering tickets early to take advantage of early fare discounts. Has anyone done this before? Villach is in Austria so I don't understand the split. I have studied seat61.com very thoroughly but this wasn't mentioned.

Thanks!

Jenny

Jenny,

Check this website to see all your transportation options: http://www.rome2rio.com

According to above website, option #2 may be a good option for you;
Train from Zell Am See to Schwarzach-St.Veit then train to Venice.

I just checked, I can see a 10:45 from Zell am See, changing at Wörgl, arrive Venezia Santa Lucia 18:10. ÖBB is currently offering this (for a date in April) at €49.

Most of the other options involve a bus. I can see a 10:19 from Zell am See, changing at Schwarzach-St.Veit and Villach, arrive Venezia Tronchetto (bus station) 16:25.

Is it telling you that you need two tickets, or just that you need to change to a BUS at Villach? If you haven't got as far as paying, then it won't have got as far as telling you how many physical tickets it will issue.

A connection is required, often to the bus that OEBB operates (replacing a train that Italy cancelled). Whether the tickets are issued together or in two pieces should not much affect the price or the buying process.
