Train and luggage

I will be flying into Rome this coming October and planned on taking the train from there into the Termini station, my question is how accommodating is the train for luggage?I have a 26" with wheels that I plan on using and as for my fellow friends traveling with me I think it's the same for them. I am imagining travelers with baggage stuffed on a train. Not a good vision in my head. Should I just reconsider and take a shuttle bus?

There are overhead racks running down both sides of the carriage. If you can lift it up there, it should fit. Note that the 26" is a bit large and you will have fun if you do a lot of train travel in Italy. In many mid-sized stations, you change platforms to change trains. To do this, you go down about 25 stairs, go through a tunnel and then up 25 stairs. Only a few have elevators (that work) or ramps.

The train, Leonardo Express, is designed to take passengers WITH luggage to and from the airport. You will have no problem taking your luggage on the train even with a couple of steamer trunks. That should be the least of your concerns

I really thinks it's awesome the way that people take the time to post their comments and help out total strangers!

Thanks to all of you!

I guess I should have mentoned I am staying in Rome only and not dragging my luggage all over Italy. I have researched hotels and will be staying just a few blocks from the termini station so once I get to the hotel that's as far as my luggage goes. I just couldn't envision how it would play out with travelers and bags in tow on a train.

Lori,

Like Frank mentioned, the Leonardo express is designed for people with luggage. Not only is there plenty of overhead room, but there are luggage racks on either end (and if i'm not mistaken, also in the middle) of each car. You'll be fine!

Enjoy your trip!

Lori -- ....I just couldn't envision how it would play out with travelers and bags in tow on a train. .....

That is the second time you have used that phrase --- I do not understand what you are implying. Please explain your concerns more clearly if want a better response. Travelers with bags on trains are very common. In fact, you could make an argument that most if not all train travelers have bags. That is not unusual.

The LExpress begins and ends at the airport and Termini. You will have plenty of time to load and unload. We have been on the LE 10 or 12 times and have never found it crowded. It you hotel is within a few blocks of Termini it makes a lot of sense just to take the train and walk. We always stay within three blocks of Termini just for that reason.

My other comment is -- Are you sure you need a 26" bag? It will be big, heavy, and a little awkward.

Frank.. I should have said how does this train differ from the others in Europe as far as luggage accommodations...

That is what you should have asked. The cars are more like a commuter train with wider doors and a lower step up. In fact, could be a level entry. Just don't have a clear memory of the entry. There is a large luggage storage rank in the middle of the car. As we all have constantly posted, it is designed to haul people with luggage to and from the airport. I am sure it can get crowded and luggage storage may be a problem at peak time but it is a short ride. You really have nothing to worry about.

Lori,

As the others have mentioned, this is a commuter train intended for getting people (with luggage) back and forth to the airport. It's not fancy and somewhat "informal".

If you're not able to fit your luggage into the overhead rack, some trains have a luggage storage section at the end of each car (can't remember if that's the case with the Leonardo Express).

I've seen travellers place their large bags in the aisle beside them, place them between the seats or place them on the seat beside them if no one is sitting there.

Happy travels!
