Train advice venice to sorrento

We are traveling by train from Venice to Sorrento in November. Our preference is to arrive in Sorrento before nightfall. We can leave early in the morning. What are our best options? Any added advice for the train recommendation is apprecisted as we havent been to Italy before. Many thanks, G L

Use the official train site for Italy. there are actually two companies, Trenitalia and Italo.

For trenitalia enter the Italian city names of venezia and napoli centrale. You'll go from Venice to Naples then catch the commuter train to Sorrento. Be sure to change the time of day to the time you wish to travel. You can book the high speed tickets up to 120 days in advance and get some great discounts.

Direct train from Venice to Naples ...
1) FR 9419
Dep 10:25 VENEZIA SANTA LUCIA (Italy)
Arr 15:35 NAPOLI CENTRALE (Italy)
Earlier trains available, but having to connect in Rome.

It's about an hour journey, with frequent departures, on the privately run Circumvesuviana Railway from
NAPOLI GARIBALDI (STAZIONE CENTRALE F.S.) to SORRENTO.

lois,

That trip is a very straight forward and quick, and you'll easily be able to arrive before nightfall. Some of my suggestions have been mentioned earlier, but since this is your first trip to Italy, this is the method I'd probably use.....

  • Venice to Naples - For travel in November, you should still be able to buy discounted Super Economy tickets on the high speed Freccia trains. Note that these are non-refundable and non-changeable once purchased so choose carefully. These come with compulsory seat reservations which are specific to train, date and departure time, so the tickets can ONLY be used on the one train listed on the ticket. I'd suggest using a departure on FrecciaRossa 9419 departing Venezia Santa Lucia at 10:25 and arriving Napoli Centrale at 15:35 (time 5H:10M). You can purchase tickets on the Trenitalia website or at www.capitainetrain.com (they sell at the same price as Trenitalia). It's a good idea to purchase early, as once the quota for Super Economy tickets is reached, the price will increase to the next level, Economy tickets.
  • Naples to Sorrento - There are two choices, which are: (1.) When you arrive at Napoli Centrale, walk downstairs to the Napoli Garibaldi station and buy tickets for the Circumvesuviana, which will get you to Sorrento in about an hour. However, I should mention that the Circumvesuviana has somewhat of a "colourful" reputation for thieves and pickpockets, and for first-time visitors that could be a bit of a culture shock. If you decide to use the Circumvesuviana, be sure to validate your ticket prior to boarding the train. (2.) The other choice is to arrange a private transfer with a firm such as the Monetti Taxi listed in the guidebook. A comfortable Mercedes with a driver that knows the area and will drop you at your hotel will be a much nicer trip (but of course will cost more).

If the times line up, you may want to do this...

Alilaguna boat to Marco Polo Airport...14 E.

Easy Jet (budget airline) to Naples...3 flights/day, 1H10m around 50 E.

Curreri Viaggi bus to Sorrento, right outside arrivals @ NAP 1H20m 10 E.
Regular coach. very comfortable.
