Traffic along the Amalfi coast

Hello. My husband and I will spend 5 days in the amalfi area in the first week of May 2012. Unfortunately, he gets car sick if anyone else drives so a hired driver or bus are out of the question. He has driven all over Italy many times before but I know that the Amalfi coast is a special concern due to twisty narrow cliff hanging roads. Will the traffic that early in May still be crazy busy or will it be a bit lighter and doable in the spring? I welcome your thoughts! Thanks.

It's no worse than a bunch of other roads. It's also crowded and crawling, so it's hard to get scared at twenty miles per hour. Finding a place to park will tick you off.

There will definitely be fewer tour buses to contend with in early May, as compared to the summer months. So the traffic should be relatively lighter. If your husband doesn't get seasick, be aware that you can easily tour virtually the entire Amalfi coast by using local ferries. Just leave your car at your hotel or wherever they tell you to park. Getting around by boat is really the fun way to see the area.

We were there last June (the end) and did not find the traffic that bad. Just take your time especially going around the "blind" corners. Yes parking will be a problem but don't keep that from stopping you.

Amy,
We were on the Amalfi Coast the first week of May this year, and traffic was not bad at all. We encountered no stops in traffic, no waiting, just breezing right along without problems. I'd classify the traffic as surprisingly light. We were on a Tauck Tour, so we were in great hands with a local driver. Hydrofoil to Capri then to Sorrento was also not at all crowded. The first week of May is still early in the tourist season. (Weather was delightful, though.) If he's driving,he'll miss a lot of the views, since he will be paying attention to the road. But, he can also stop at various places along the way and soak in the scenery. It's fun to go one direction via road and then take a boat back in the other direction (but I realize with a rental car that might not be a possibility). Have a fun trip :)

Amy - The drive does have beautiful scenery, which, as mentioned, your husband is likely to miss if he is driving, even if the traffic is light. The road is pretty twisty, like our own Highway 1 here in California. Parking is also difficult, but that is true in most parts of Italy anyway. The bus from Sorrento south can get very crowded and the time schedule is not always met. I WILL share a secret about taking the bus, though. Get seats over the rear wheel axle - most people want the best seats for the scenery and want to sit up front. You can see just fine from the back, and the drivers WILL get you sick, at least the times we've taken this route they have. But not if you sit in the back. The twists and turns of the bus are hardly noticable in the back.

Thanks so much for all of your help. I wish we could try the back of the bus but if he gets sick, he is out for 24 to 36 hours so we can't tme a chance. The ferry suggestion may be the best answer. Thank you all!
