I went to Italy once before and stayed in several hotels (not in Rome) with amazing traditional decoration, artwork, furniture and woodwork. Was actually blown away by some of the things I saw in the hotels and these were mid price.
Looking for something similar in Rome. I checked the websites of the hotels listed in Ricks book (Ancient Rome, Pantheon) and the decor appears a bit plain and even modern - Casa di Santa Brigada, Relias Teatro Argentina, Hotel Nationale, Hotel Portoghesi.
After this trip I told my wife that there was no need to stay in hotels with mosaic tile floors and ceilings painted like the Sistine chapel because these are a dime a dozen in the museums but why not?
Anyone stay in a Rome hotel with traditional decor?
