We will be visiting Italy in May and are driving from Rome to Siena. We are looking for a place to stop along the way and are looking for suggestions. I've seen Orvieto, Perugia, and Montepulciano all suggested. Are there one or two that stand out as 'must-see' places? We'll be wine tasting in Siena so are looking for places to stop with interesting history and or other things to see.

Assisi and Orvieto
Orvieto and Montepulciano are the both beautiful and very easy stops along the way. You could add Civita Di Bagnoregio or Pienza if you have time. Civita could be coupled with Orvieto. Pienza is not far from Montepulciano. All are beautiful places, with Civita being the most unique.
Love Orvieto. A lovely town with an incredible Duomo. The underground tour was very interesting as well. Another vote for Pienza. We enjoyed it much more than Montepulciano.
