Towns to visit after Siena before going to Rome

Hello,
I am spending four days in Siena from 20 October to 24 October, and want to spend four days someplace after that between there and Rome, where I will be from October 28 to November 2. This is my first time to Italy and need suggestions please.

Thank you so very much.

Lisa, looking back at your previous posts it appears that your plans have sort of been all over the place. You did have Florence in those previous plans, and I'm curious if it's still in there somewhere? If so, what does your larger itinerary look like right now?

Editing to add: it wasn't completely clear if the trip is THIS year or next.

Orvieto and Viterbo? Not sure there's enough at either for 4 full days but hopefully others with greater knowledge of the region will chime in. You are traveling strictly by public transport, last I knew.

We just spent 3 nites in Orvieto-second time there
There are some museums, underground tours etc but not sure you can fill 3 full days

We were just there to relax;)

Opposite direction but Bologna would work
At this late date you probably have to go wherever you find lodging

I am planning to relax myself! I will try Orvieto

Thanks so much. I’m sure lodging won’t be a problem anyway.

Orvieto has a lot more sights than is typical for a hill town, and it is lovely just to walk around.

If you do go to Orvieto, Civita is nearby and interesting to visit.
Viterbo was mentioned but I much prefer Tarquinia. Both are reasonably close to Orvieto.

And Assisi is nearby as a day trip from Orvieto.

Unless you have a car many of the places mentioned above are not really easy to get to from Orvieto

Check on Trenitalia before you make plans for any day trips. For instance, Orvieto to Assisi is 2.5 to 3 hours, plus neither one has the train station inside the city. For Orvieto, you will want to enter Orvieto Centro, and for Assisi you also need to enter Assisi Centro to include the bus from the train station into the city. Both of those add even more time.

From Siena you might want to consider going to Montepulciano. There’s a bus from Montepulciano to go over to little nearby Pienza, another charming location.

Or, head back to Florence, and there’s possibilities, such as Arezzo, Perugia (day trips to Assisi & Spello), or Orvieto. There’s a train line from Perugia back to Rome, or the straighter north/south route of Arezzo, etc.

Lisa, maybe a better question for you is what are you wanting to do & see at this next location? I would be tempted to tell you to stay in two different locations for two days each, but I don’t have any idea of your wishes for these days,

When I visit these areas, I like to rent a car. Montepulciano, Viterbo, Assisi, Civita, Tarquinia are all very easy to get to with a car but more of a challenge without. Driving in Italy is easy if you don't try to drive like Emo. Parking is also not as much of a problem as people try to suggest.
If you go to Montepulciano from Orvieto, take the back roads and explore the lakes. To shorten up the return, take the autostrada. The car rental in Orvieto is literally across the street from the train station. It could not be easier.

The OP is already in Italy and I'm sure doesn't have the IDP strongly suggested or even required (by some agencies) to rent/drive in the country. While AAA apparently offers an online process now for acquiring one from overseas, she doesn't have the time required to do that (allow at least 5 days from application).

For this OP, the ship has apparently sailed. But anyone else who happens upon this thread should become aware of the many options.
As an aside, and I am not suggesting anything, I have always carried an international permit in recent years but 15, 20, 30 years ago, I never did. I never had a problem obtaining a rental. I have rented from many of the major agencies.
As noted, I do carry one now, but in recent years (let's say for the last 10 or so) I have never once been asked to provide one. That includes rentals in Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands. I always wonder why I bothered.

RE IDP: The rental agency rarely cares if you have it, police do--so if there is just a routine stop or god forbid an accident, you need it.

Regarding the IDP-we have been asked the past 2 or 3 times?
As I reported on another thread we just witnessed someone being denied a rental because they did not have one

It’s 20 bucks-no big hardship. Smart to get and carry even if you don’t plan to drive
Stuff happens -strikes, change in plans etc
We both carry one - but my husband has always done all the driving
