Looking for a nice town to stay in before we head to the Cinque Terre. I was looking at Lucca but I would appreciate any views and experiences

We stayed in Pisa on the way out of the Cinque Terre. We really did not get to do Pisa justice, but did stay in a nice hotel- The Allessandro della Spina. We were in Vernazza 8 days photographing and then took a train directly from Vernazza to Pisa. Very easy. There is only one or 2 direct trains from the Cinque Terre to Pisa, Most stop at La Spezia. I would not recommend staying over night in La Spezia-- just not very scenic or quaint.
Thank you for your reply. We will be flying into Pisa so we actually wanted to see something different. As we are going in November we have to make sure places are actually open.I would love to stay in Volterra but I wanted to get some distance done from Siena/Florence before we arrive in Cingue Terre

We were totally charmed with Lucca. It was my 14 year old daughter's favorite town during our Italian trip. My husband and I especially enjoyed our early morning walk around the preserved ramparts. Dinner at Trattoria da Leo was very good. It was easy to walk into the walled city from the train station. Everyone in our family looks forward to returning to Lucca.
We stayed at an agriturismo named Il Lucherino in Siena....very quiet and nice. Easy to get around....
Lucca is magical. Because it's entirely walled, there's not much car traffic. It's large enough that you get some variety walking around. The medieval character is well preserved. The walls are fun to walk on. There are very good - and reasonably priced - restaurants. Sitting so close to Florence and Pisa it doesn't seem to get so many bus tours that you feel crowded.
