We are staying near Siena. The day we drive there from Rome we would like to stop at a town along the way. Any recommendations for a 1-2 hours stop somewhere along the way? I was thinking Orvieto. We will have suitcases in the car so I'm concerned about leaving the car.
We did something similar, and were planning to stop in Orvieto, but ended up skipping it and stopping in Montepulciano, then Montalcino, and taking some back roads to Siena. It was a beautiful drive, and we just loved Montepulciano.
I was also thinking Montepulciano. Back road from there to Siena passes through Pienza, which is also worth a stop. Orvieto is great too, and would be the better choice if you prefer the Autostada to back roads. Chiusi for Etruscan sights is another option near the Autostrada. Most theft problems occur when cars are left unattended overnight. Minimize your changes of a problem by making sure all suitcases are hidden out of sight in the trunk, and carry any valuables with you in your day bag. Don't leave anything in plain sight.
