town south of rome

we arrive in rome in early afternoon after 20 hour flight & will be driving down south towards Naples. Would like to find an interesting town to stay overnight about one hour south along the coast or inland. Any ideas? Henry

I can't think of a good overnight stop that's only one hour south of Rome airport but Montecassino is 1 hr 45 min south on the A1, lots of history there, the abbey, the WW2 epic battle, etc.

Just wanted to add that the abbey at Monte Cassino is very interesting and worth seeing, the town of Cassino itself is not pretty, or even picturesque. As it was all destroyed during the war it has all been rebuilt in the last 50 years, though the natural landscape around the area is very pretty.

As for along the coast I would suggest Sperlonga, which is a bit further south, about halfway between Rome and Naples and very pretty, and a great place for a swim too if you are interested.

We've stayed in Fiuggi - nothing to write home about the town - most people visit to "take the waters"...it's a European spa town...but we had Starwood points for a hotel there and it was ok.

Honestly though?? my FAVORITE thing to do when I arrive is to pick up the car and stay somewhere right off the highway...go into Rome for a nice meal and stroll around Rome and get a good sleep...and then wake up and drive down :-) (we usually stay at the Sheraton Golf Parco de'Medici - very convenient and easy to get to and back on the road in the morning...free parking...free shuttle bus into Rome. It does lack charm though!)
