I was watching Ricks CD on Italy..he discussed a town where students work on stautes made from alabaster. The demonstrated how the rock could be, what appeared, reduced with what appeared to be a lathe and appropriated tools. I want to go visit this town and phtograph the students working, as did Michealangelo.
Thanks for any help.
Mike
It is probably Volterra. We visited Volterra a few years back and it is a lovely town and there are numerous alabaster workshops throughout the town. We popped into several and watched them at work. Purchased several alabaster items including a beautiful chess set.
Hi Mike. Are you referring to Volterra in Tuscany? There are several alabaster workshops & stores selling alabaster in Volterra. Our tour guide took us to a reputable workshop in which we watched a man working with alabaster for a few minutes. They had many pieces there that were absolutely gorgeous! Volterra is a nice town to visit, in general. There's a great etruscan museum there & a Roman amphitheater. Hope this helps. By the way, since you're in San Diego, I'm guessing you felt the earthquake pretty strong this afternoon!
I also thought of Volterra right away. It is really fun to watch the artists at their work. Here is a picture I shot:
And I agree, the Etruscan museum is great! Get the audio-guide and immerse yourself into some really interesting history.
