My wife & I are traveling to Italy next month. We fly into Rome and out of Venice. Any recommendations of a good town to stay in for a brief visit between Rome & Venice?
Probably by train.
The Deutsche Bahn website is really handy when you are looking for a place to break up a train trip. If you search for trains from Rome to Venice, once the query comes back there will be an option to show the details / intermediate stops. This will show each of the towns the train stops in and might help narrow down your choices.

Florence would be the best bet for major sites. Good choices for smaller towns would be Orvieto, Siena or Padua.
Or Bologna.
If you are heading to Venice from Rome on the Eurostar or AV train, your train will stop in Florence (1hr.34min). Most are non-stop between Rome and Florence. Therefore, you cannot get off at smaller towns along the way. However, you can take the ICPlus or Regional trains out of Rome and these trains will make intermediate stops. The slower trains are less expensive as well.
Florence was already mentioned above and is a great stop because you can reach most major sights within a 15 minute walk from the train station. You can probably check your bags in at the train station while you're out visiting the city.
HAS to be Firenze! I think all who have suggested this are right on.
mantova, como, padova, bergamo, parma, verona. All of these are lovely cities to visit with lots of things to see. Rome to Venice covers quite a swath of Italy, everyone will say Florence, which you should go to if you have never been to Italy, but some of the above listed places are bit off the beaten path.
