tours St. Marks, St. Peters

We will be in Venice and Rome in mid Sept. What's your experience with lines at St. Mark's, will be need some kind of pass or reservation to get in without a long line? or is that just the way it is as the church is free to see?
And I realize there are many tours at St. Peter's but is there one just to get to the Sistine Chapel? The ones I'm finding all seem to link to the Vatican museum. Thanks for your help

According to Rick, if you check your bag at St Marks you get to skip the line.

In two trips to Venice what I found worked for At. Mark's was to check the bag per Rick's instructions, and go about 3:30PM, when the daytrip hoards have moved out. At the Vatican, I highly recommend http://www.walksofitaly.com/ Pristine Sistine tour.

thanks, and I realize the Sistine Chapel is in the Vatican museum area I just remembered going about 25 years ago and just seeing the chapel, not the rest of it. I thought maybe there was just a tour for it alone
thanks for the help, as always, you guys help those of us who are a bit overwhelmed by all of the detail...
