I am a bit confused on the tours of the Colosseum. First, the private tour through Tickitaly may be a bit too expensive for me (and perhaps to long at 3 hours) but is it the only way to see the restricted parts? And what are the restricted parts? The 1.5 tour by Pierreci seems appealing but can you use your Roma card? I have downloaded Rick Steeves tour but that will not allow us into restricted areas. Thanking you all in advance, I so value your responses.

You can get the underground and 3rd ring tour directly through the colosseum for an extra 9 euro (on top of entry fee of about 12 euro...). It was a very good tour, no need to pay an outside provider.
You do need to call by phone to schedule it though. Info here:
