I'd suggest you take a look at the website for Context Rome. Far less expensive than a private guide, but they limit their groups to 6 and will go with fewer. I've been on several of their tours with only two other people. And the quality of the guides/tours has always been great. I've done their St Peter's/Vatican Museums tour and so enjoyed it... even though I had already been there several times. Learned so much.

I used Viator.com and was very pleased with the Vatican tour I had. They have small groups, I like their prices too. Viator is a consolidator and they sign you up with smaller tour companies (also used them in Venice and Milan - and was
not disappointed.)
