Tours & Getting Around From Amalfi

Hi all. There are 4 of us staying in Amalfi for 4 nights in late September. We will be coming from Rome. The hotel said we should take a fast train from Rome to Salerno and then bus or ferry to the hotel in Amalfi.

We are interested in the following tours from Amalfi:

  1. Pompeii/Vesuvius - prefer private or small group
  2. Capri
  3. Drive/tour along the Amalfi coast to include stops in Positano and Ravello.

Any recommendations/suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Also, does anyone have any recommendations for car services between Salerno and Amalfi? I know there is a ferry but it may not run as frequently as we desire or have availability.

Thanks everyone.

It is easy to take the bus from Salerno to Amalfi Town. Your hotel should be able to guide you or to recommend a driver.

For Pompeii, you can take the train from Salerno to Pompei (town) and walk or take a taxi to the ruins. OR you can take the bus to Sorrento and the train to Pompeii Scavi (the ruins). I would hire Gaetano Manfredi (R.S. recommendation, too) to meet you there and give you a fabulous private tour. I am sure you can get a private driver to take you there, too, and maybe combine it with an Amalfi Coast driving tour. Rick Steves' book should have recommendations on that. We always use public trans.

Take the bus to Sorrento or Positano and catch the ferry to Capri - www.positano.com/en/ferry-schedule.

We always take the bus to explore the coastline. But many people on this site like Monetti Taxi service - you will be able to have them stop for photos where they can, unlike a city bus !

Harold, you do not need a tour of Capri as it's not very large, and much of it is pedestrianized. Take a good guidebook (do some reading before you go) and pick up a map when you get there. The town of Anacapri, on Mt. Solaro, can be reached by bus. See local transport schedule here:

There is no need to go to Positano to catch a ferry, you can go from Amalfi.
