tours from Trieste

We are taking a cruise from Trieste in Nov. and are going a few days early (to insure our luggage arrives among other things) but would like to see Venice while we are there. Advice on how to get there, and get around, and if a day tour with a guide would be the best way if so how to find such a person. Help would be greatly appreciated!

It is a journey of 2-3 hours by train, depending on the train you choose. There is a Regionale Veloce train departing Trieste at 16 minutes after the hour (7:16, 8:16, etc.) that arrives in Venice 2 hours 5 minutes later. Tickets are around 14 euros each for that train. The trains that take longer cost more.

You can buy them in advance on Trenitalia.com, or at the station the day of travel. Make sure you specify the destination as “Venezia S.L.” (Venezia Santa Lucia) , not Venezia Mestre which is on the mainland.

ViaMichelin estimates the driving time at about 2-1/2 hours excluding stops, traffic delays, getting lost, etc., so I don't think a tour involving bus transportation is a good way to go. And I, personally, wouldn't want to be taken around Venice as part of a crowd. The joy of Venice is wandering the back canals, not following the mob from the train station to the Rialto Bridge to Piazza San Marco. I'd want to have the flexibility to plan my own day in Venice (and one day is seriously not enough). Now, if you're thinking about some sort of private tour, that would be great--with an expert's guidance you'd see a lot. But one day is still not enough. I'd say that if you were staying in Venice. Thinking about losing 4-5 hours to travel from Trieste and back there at the end of the day makes my heart hurt.

What is your arrival airport? Could you fly into Venice and spend a few nights there before moving over to Trieste? (I have nothing against Trieste, but you've said you want to see Venice.)

Easy train ride to Venice from Trieste. I did it in August. I would just wander around and use the internet before you go. Don't think a tour guide would be that beneficial. Loved Trieste... suggest visiting the large caste just outside the city.

Thank you so much! My husband didn't want to go to Venice at all but I talked him into one day. Now I know exactly how to get there, and probably won't pursue a guide. Will definitely head for the castle in Trieste, perhaps even both of them! We will have 2+ days in Trieste in addition to the one in Venice.
