Will be on Sicily via the port at Messina October 9th via a cruise. Looking for tours that go to Mt Etna. Any advice on best way to experience Mt Etna are welcome. We do have a ship excursion that takes you there by 4x4 but wondered if just going to the cable car is just enough.
Since Etna has been VERY active lately, I wouldn't count on tours.
Well that's not necessarily true. We've gone to other erupting volcanoes, Iceland and Hawaii while there was quite a bit of lava flow. It all depends on where the eruption is happening and what the particular consequences are. Which is why I'm hoping somebody that's recently gone or is there will give a shout out as to what the conditions seem to be.
I have a gastronomic/winery tour on the slopes of Etna booked for next April with the company Sicily Life, who I've used in the past and are fantastic. When booking, I asked about the recent eruptions and they seemed unconcerned. We'll see!
Thanks i'll check with them!
We were there during an eruption with ash clouds severe enough to disrupt air traffic and dust coating everything downwind daily. The locals referred to it as Mama Etna fertilizing the land, not with a fear of destruction.
