For our trip in may, we hope to spend a very complete morning at the Vatican museum,Sistine chapel and ST. Peters. I understand that there are only cafes on site which I imagine would be crowded at lunch time. In which direction beyond the walls should we go, for the best selection of restaurants? And speaking of food, any suggestions for centrally located markets to get food to go while in Rome? Thanks so much!
Honestly, walk in any direction away from the Vatican and you'll be able to find good food for not a lot of money. Go several blocks away and look for menus in Italian. If they're in English then they are touristy restaurants and will cost more than they should. You won't have any problems finding something good. Donna
One of my favorite places is Osteria della Commarinear the Vatican . It is only open for dinner, but do consider going there. As said above, walk a few streets away from the Vatican into the Prati neighborhood and you will find many places.
A few blocks from the museums is Isola della Pizza, you can check their website. There is a good cafe in the courtyard of the museums with very good salads and light lunch options; service is very quick and no one lingers over lunch - I've been there many times and have never waited more than a couple of minutes for a table. Under no circumstances eat the pizza at the downstairs cafeteria inside the museums.
