Touring Rome South in Italy in early Oct.: need advise

Hi! Toured Rome north last October. How should I do Rome south this October? Arriving on a Sunday so Sat. & Sun. would be traveling days. Fly into Rome/Naples? Stay in what places for the next 7 nights? I was going to do southern Italy and some of Greece but that now sounds like too much. Any tips on airlines, trains, sites? I loved using air bnb last year in Italy. Need help; what would you do?
I am in my 60s and so is my traveling buddy.

I would fly into Naples. When we travelled to the area we did it by car. Drove to Pompei the first night and toured it the next day before going onto Sorrento as a base for the area. We toured the Amalfi Coast by boat. I consider beautiful, but dreadfully touristy. We can say we were there, but even in late September crowded. We also went to Puglia when was great. Very different than north of Rome and the to Bari to catch a ferry to Croatia.

Train travel would be different, but region is worth exploring.

Hi ,
i been in Naples two week a go and i been in Pompeii from Naples by train take about 1 hour .
Than the next day we went to to visit the Amalfi Coast with a boat trip from Naples to Positano was 1 day tour very nice and good because we stayed with the hotel in Naples so we only did a a one day trip .
We went to Capri also . Pompeii very interesting place but what i advice you dont'miss the Amalfi coast is more beautiful than Sorrento . And do not miss Capri . Any way was all lovely and the food spectacular ...

I would fly round-trip Naples, split my time between Salerno and either Sorrento or Naples. Use the time in Salerno to explore the Amalfi Coast (bus/ferry) and Paestum (bus or train). Visit Pompeii, Herculaneum, Naples/Sorrento from either Sorrento or Naples using the Circumvesuviana local tram/train. Naples is an experience you have to be ready for, but worth it if you are game. I really liked Sorrento but I was there in February with few tourists. I don't know if I'd like it as much "in season." Of the 3 towns, Sorrento is the most expensive.

Chani's plan sounds right. If you can visit Ravello on the Amalfi Coast as well as Amalfi, Positano, and Sorrento. Base in Salerno sounds like it has advantages as well, like Paestum.

LOL. Ain't it the truth. Which is why I like Chani's plan, but would base in Sorrento and just day trip into Naples ( mostly for the Archeological museum).

Fly into and out of Naples but I wouldn't stay there.
I would split the nights between Sorrento and then the balance either in Positano or Ravello.
(I find people who have stayed in Positano have a much different opinion of the town than folks that only day trip in ; Ravello everyone loves but would feel a little secluded which could be a good or bad thing)

Capri, Pompeii, exploring the many towns along the Amalfi Coast should be considered the 3 must do's.
After that cater to your interests if you want a day trip to Naples, visit other ancient ruins, hikes above the Amalfi Coast, another nearby island, etc...

Early October is a good time, it may rain more than other times but otherwise weather is good, not too hot and not cold. Still touristy and not sleepy but far from the big crowds you would find in the summer or even Sept. ; it is end of the season basically. You should be able to take the buses in the area without them being overcrowded which is a big plus!

Personally though I dislike moving around so much I think 1 overnight in Capri (assuming you pack light) in the middle is not a bad idea either, that would give you 3 stays in a short time but you would get to experience Capri in the evening and mornings without hardly anyone around. I really enjoyed Capri but only saw it as a day trip from Sorrento so would work in an overnight if I returned to the region.
