touring murano and burano

Trying to decide whether to take a tour with Viator that takes you from Venice to Murano and Burano by water taxi and visits glassmaking shop (Murano) and lacemaking shop (Burano), both with demonstrations, or to just find a way to do it on our own. We'll be there early October. Suggestions/Advice?

Hey, I will be there in October also. We have decided to get a 48 hour vaporetto pass and go by ourselves to Murano, etc.

The others are right- easy to do on your own! Murano glass also has a warehouse in Venice and they do demonstrations there as well.

Rick Steves has an excellent self-guided tour for all three islands in his Venice guide. Highly recommend doing it on your own.

I am going in a couple of weeks and had same question...thank you!
Curious whether you can get to any of the other islands by vaparetto?

If you stay at some hotels (Hotel Saturnia and International for example) they'll send you to Murano on a private water taxi for free. You definitely do NOT need to pay viator or any other person.

Each vaporetto stop lists all the places it goes. I believe most all the outlying islands are covered. San Giorgio Maggiore, Torcello, San Michele (cemertary which my friend thought was great but I was bored), possibly to others not covered by Ricks book, and also to the lido (beach).

Yes, you can get to other islands by vaporetto. Certosa, Vignole, Sant Erasmo, Mazzorbo, San Servolo are all on vap routes.

For the typical visitor, there is not a whole lot to see there. We have been to Certosa several times for picnics, but that has been when staying in Venice for a month or two. But if the crowds are getting to you, a trip to other islands can be fun.
