Touring Italy....Dolomites & Rome

I plan to travel by car to Italy, touring the Dolmites, then travel for a few days to Rome, but I want to travel by train to Rome. Any suggestions where it would be safe to leave my car for 4 days? Can I take the train from Bolzano? I am flying in/ home from Munich.

Hi gabi, That's a tough question. When are you planning on traveling? How many days/nights do you plan to spend in the Dolomites? Is Italy part of a longer trip, meaning after arriving in Munich, are you staying in Germany or Austria for a few nights before heading into Italy or after Italy? Normally I suggest a car for the Dolomites, but in this case and with such little info to go on, I'd take the train to either Bozen/Bolzano or Ponte Gardena (Waidbruck) and take a bus into the Val Gardena (base here) and use the buses and lifts for your stay in the Dolomites. www.val-gardena.com If you're spending time in Germany and/or Austria with a rental car before heading into Italy, drop the car in Garmisch (off the top of my head) and train to the suggestions in the Dolomite area above. Or train to Bolzano, pick up a car there, tour the Dolomites, and return it to Bolzano before continuing to Rome by train. You can take an overnight train back to Munich if you wish (we did that 10 years ago and enjoyed it).

I like Lola's idea. Wish I had thought of that! Paul
