touring Italy

Don't get me wrong. I love Italy and I will continue to go there but it just seems that so many of the cities are overrun with tourists and more tourists. I usually go in March and then it is not so bad but I travelled in April this time and it was a lot more crowded wherever I went. Are there cities that still offer good restaurants, decent hotels, museums of interest that are not overrun with tourists? Thanks in advance.

Mary, There probably are many places in Italy that are not "overrun with tourists", but I'm not sure where they are? The tourists that comprise the crowds that you found, are probably there for the same reason you are. It seems like a bit of a "contradiction in terms" to try and find an area with "good restaurants, decent hotels, museums of interest" that aren't packed with tourists. Those facilities can only exist with sufficient revenue from tourists, the very people that are making things so crowded. You might check the Lonely Planet Guidebooks, as they often get to more "out of the way" locations. Good luck!
