Touring in Alberobello Truli houses

Hi I'm going to be in Bari Italy in October and want to go tour the town of Alberobello and the truli houses. Our ship offers a tour but only in the afternoon and for only 1.5 hrs then off to Polignano al mare for only 45 min. I found a private operator that will pick us up and take us on a 3 hr tour and starting in the morning when there may be less tourists. I wanted to know if 3 hours is too long in this small town, we want to have lunch there as well. Anyone that's been to Alberobello i would love to hear from.

That is way too much time for Alberobello! Give it a lot less time and add much more time to Polignano a Mare.

Thanks for the reply. Only we are limited in the cruise excursion to only 45 min in Polignano al Mare. I will see if the private tour operator if he will take us to Polignano for lunch and then a little longer stay there. We originally were trying to pair Alberobello with the Castellano Caves. Which we could still do. It would be just a 2 hr tour in Alberobello and then the 50 min cave tour. Any knowledge of the caves if they are worth it?

Hi Jackiebret,

I stayed overnight at Alberobello in May and was really glad to experience this small city when it wasn’t busy. A couple of suggestions:

Is your private operator just for you, or is it a small group tour with a set itinerary? If it’s just for you, I recommend having them take you from Bari to Alberobello, walk around for an hour, drive some of the backroads to nearby Locorotondo (10 minutes away) and have a nice lunch in this charming tiny upper round city with beautiful lanes to explore & photograph. The restaurant food is better there. Martina Franca is another option if you would rather have a grander-looking second city which has Baroque architecture.

I loved Polignano a Mare, too. It has beautiful lanes! They were magical during the evening and early mornings when hardly anyone was exploring but crowded during the day. Still worth seeing but not if you’re just following the person’s head walking in front of you.

Edit: I just saw you replied while I was typing. I didn’t go to the caves here since I went through the huge Postojna Cave near Ljubljana last year. Sorry, no advice for this one,
