Touring Cinque Terre

Hello fellow travelers

We will be (family of 4, 2 kids ages 17/8) going to RioMaggiore in June and will spend 2 nights there. I would like to hike the trails. Is that something we can do by ourselves or de we need to engage a guide? I looked at http://www.cinqueterretour.it/index.php/en/private-tours/cinque-terre/cinque-terre-walking-tour.html

Given that we have only one full day there, I don't want to waste time by trying to figure out directions etc., but if it is reasonably straightforward to follow the route I could save some money.

Thanks

If you're referring to the popular Sentiero Azzurro (former No. 2) trails, you can easily hike them on your own. They're easy to follow and there will be lots of others hiking with you. Note that a Cinque Terre Pass is required to hike those specific trails, which you can easily buy when you arrive there. No passes are required to hike the many other trails in the area.

It's important to note that at the present time, the No. 2 trails from Riomaggiore to Manarola (Via dell' Amore) and from Manarola to Corniglia are closed and likely won't re-open this year. You can however still hike from Corniglia to Vernazza and Vernazza to Monterosso. Note that when you arrive in Corniglia by train, you'll have to climb lots of stairs to reach the town (where the trail starts). You can take the small shuttle bus up the hill for a small fee, unless you have a Cinque Terre Treno card, which I believe covers that.

There are two "schools of thought" on which end is better to start from. I normally prefer starting from Monterosso as that's the most challenging section. There's quite a climb at the beginning, and I find it easier to go up steep hills rather than down. The stretch from Vernazza to Corniglia is slightly easier. You can easily use the local trains to bypass the sections of trail that are closed.

With only one full day, I would spend it exploring the towns, eating good food, and enjoying the views from the coastline and village to village ferry. In Vernazza, go meet the cannoli brothers at the top of the town while enjoying, what else - a cannoli; sit in the harbor and watch the fishermen, savor lunch while enjoying the view. Each village has its unique feel - I have memories of the villages more than hiking the trails between RioMaggiore to Manarola (closed) and Corniglia to Vernazza. If you decide to hike the Corniglia to Vernazza trail, that is the direction I would do again as the Vernazza end is very steep and goes uphill. The Corniglia start is more level and ends going downhill into Vernazza. Good luck in deciding!

You're on the right path and don't need a local guide. Do pay attention to your footing, as trails can be narrow, or slippery when wet.
