Touring a Country road on a Vespa Scooter in Le Marche region of Italy - Any suggestions?

My wife and I will be in the Le Marche region in October of this year and we are interested in traveling down scenic roads on a Vespa. I am an experienced Vespa owner and have driven throughout Europe (including Italy) in a car but now want to try a scooter just for a one day sight seeing. Do people have any suggestions what areas are particularly scenic, not on high traffic urban areas. I also need to know where I can rent a Vespa. Do I need a special licence to drive a Vespa in Italy?

Try to look at DK Back Roads Northern Italy book. I know they have a section on scenic roads in Le Marche. I don’t own a copy, but looked at a copy from our library. I have used the book in the past to find scenic routes in Tuscany. It’s a great resource because it gives you scenic small routes and discusses sites along the way. We have gone to many wonderful places thanks to this book. Your trip sounds exciting!

I know you need IDP to drive a car. I would get it as cheap insurance should some police officer decides that you need it. Also, I think you need a motorcycle endorsement on your driver license to rent over 250cc bike. Traveling on a Vespa down scenic roads is over rated. Hopefully Roberto will come along with a much better response.

Are both you and your wife experienced. Or are you experienced with a rider.

Are you sure you want to be on a road rubber necking at the scenery when a local or two wants to get somewhere in a hurry?

How about a tourist in a car gazing at the scenery and not really on the lookout for a Vespa

When they show the "Vespa" scene in the movies, the stunt drivers are on a closed road.

Be sure to think it through

If you drive a Vespa in your home country, your license will work in Italy, once you obtain an International Driving Permit. You can get that at any AAA office (I assume you are in US).
The Marche is not a small region. I had Vespas and motorcycles and I can tell you that if you plan to rent a 125cc, any trip over 80km in a day, is a huge pain in the arse (and I intend that literally). The 150cc and above is a bit better, at least you are allowed on the freeways (although there are none of those in the Marche, except for the A14 along the coast. I’d be more inclined to rent one for one day to visit places within 50 km.

Can you clarify? Is my U.S. automobile driver's licence sufficient to ride a 125cc Vespa/scooter in Italy without a need to get some other more specific licence? In your response if I do need a licence besides my regular US automobile licence (in US i do not need a special licence to operate my 125cc Vespa, the automobile licence is good enough) can you describe the licence type.

BTW, I am total agreement of not doing more than 50km on a 125cc and I am okay with that. I have seen some tours with a 28 km round trip, which sounds fine to me.

If you have an automobile’s Driver license, that is a type B in the international driving permit, which also corresponds to the type B in Italy (Italy uses the international classification).
A type B license is sufficient for motorcycles (including Vespa) up to 125cc. For anything above you need a motorcycle license (type A).

I would only do so in the Monte Conero area--anywhere else I would think the distances too far. Pretty sure you can rent in Sirolo.
There is also a park just north of Pesaro that is quite scenic with pretty villages/amazing sea views, but Pesaro is probably the only place you could find rentals, and the town itself would not be somewhere I would want to ride a scooter.
