Tour South of Italy for 4 days

I am planning on doing a 4 days trip South of Rome going to Naples, Pompeii, Sorrento and Amalfi Coast before doing my tour of Rome. I am arriving with my wife in Rome from Canada on Saturday afternoon. Based on the blogs I have read it seems like all these places are close to eachother. But I am interested to know which place can be a good base for me to stay and visit all these palces. Help me please with my itinerary. Thanks

Hi Ken I have plan to visit Capri as well..How do you think I can plan my trip to all these places? How many days or hours to spend at each location? I like to visit scenic spots and get a taste of everything. Thanks

Jag, I'd suggest using Sorrento as your "home base" in that area, as it's reasonably central. The trip to Pompeii is a short journey on the Circumvesuviana and you can also visit Herculaneum if you're interested. With only four days, I'm not sure you'll be able to see much of the "Amalfi Coast" as that covers a considerable area. Which places are you most interested in seeing there? Also, were you planning to take a day trip to Capri? Are you taking one of the RS Rome tours? Happy travels!

I second the idea of staying in Sorrento as a base. Was it Rick Steves himself who said in Sorrento it feels like everyone works for the chamber of commerce to welcome you? Way Back When, I added three nights to Sorrento at the end of a trip before returning to Rome. I did not get to see the Amalfi coast, but I had a full day hiking on Capri and seeing the Blue Grotto, a full day at Pompeii and Herculaneum, and some time just to hang in Sorrento and enjoy life. With perhaps one more day than I had, you'll be in good shape. Well worthwhile.
