Hi,
Honestly if you are just flying to Rome and back it will be so much easier and cheaper just to see it on your own. All the major sights have tour guides you can hire to take you around and explain things in depth and can answer all your questions. They are MUCH better. Getting around the city is simple and easy, they have a good subway and people are very helpful to give walking directions. Taxi's are great as well. The city isn't difficult to navigate anyway. You'll be on your own time and can each enjoy things at your own pace. Tours tend to rush you through and are rarely focused on anything but getting you to shop.
AS far as daytrips it's easy as well. The train station is excellent and you can easily get to Ostia Antica near the sea. Try to to a daytrip to a hill town in Umbria as well. Easy to do and very rewarding. Orvieto is a good one.
I agree, do a daytrip on your own and save a lot of money. Rick does a great job of explaining how to reach other cities as a daytrip and many times he includes self guided tours. I recommend seeing Orvieto - it's only an hour from Rome by train and it's a great break from the busy engery of Rome.
