Tour Pompeii/Hike Mt. Vesivius

Hi all. My husband and I were looking for a tour that let's us see Pompeii and hike Mt. Vesuvius. We will be coming from Rome. We saw one on "The Roman Guy" tours, but the base fee includes private transportation which we don't have the money for. Any others you know of? Or separate tours for each? Or do you think we could do this ourselves? How? Thanks so much!

You might want to check with Mondo Tours highly recommended by many folks on the forum. The offer a number of tours in the Naples/Pompeii/Amalfi area. Apparently they don’t offer one of Vesuvius.

Are you going to have a rental car already? We drove to Pompeii, but didn’t include an ascent of Vesuvius on our trip. With your own car and hiking boots, you should be able to do both on your own.

If you are looking for a group day tour from Rome that includes both Pompeii and Vesuvius, I would be surprised if such a thing exists.

To include the travel to/from Rome and a meaningful amount of time at Pompeii and still get to Vesuvius, would border on an endurance test, rather than a tourist excursion.

If this is your November trip, be aware there is 10 hrs of daylight at that time of year.

A day trip to Pompeii from Rome is a long day. Cramming Vesuvius into it, makes it brutal

Agree if this is November you may be hard pressed to fit both in. Pompeii is a snap to do independently (train to Naples, change to Circumvesuviana to Pompeii). I don't know about Vesuvius, but even as an avid hiker, I did not feel compelled to visit the volcano because the views of it are so compelling from Pompeii. I would take a good visit to Pompeii over a rush to do both.

We just did the City Wonders group day trip tour -that went to Pompeii and then hiked Mt Vesuvius last week- (check trip advisor) or City Wonders directly. Pompeii is huge, we spent just a few short hours there, so you get a good "taste" of Pompeii. The road up to Vesuvius was very narrow with a lot of steep turns. The bus did a good job (but had to stop at a few turns to honk at the cars in the way), I wouldn't want to drive it myself. It was a good day trip for a taste of each. I am glad we did it, but it was a long day.

That would be my take on it as well: I wouldn't want to do both in one day from Rome. Having done Pompeii twice, the site is much bigger than most people expect it to be, and seeing Vesuvius looming over one of the cities it destroyed made a bigger impression on me than climbing it ever would. Can you do Pompeii by yourselves? Sure. We have, but from Sorrento. Still, trains from Rome to Naples + local commuter trains to the excavation are traveled by many tourists every year. Once there, you can hire a human guide at the entrance or use your own guidebooks or audioguides.

Phillip mentioned Mondo guides? If you can get yourself to the meeting point near the entrance (using those trains I mentioned above), they are very good tours that have gotten lots of great reviews, and for a good price besides.

There are bus tours which you can do from Rome but they take longer to get there than by rail.

We went to Mt Vesuvius and Pompeii but different days . We came from Sorrento and I still couldn’t imagine doing both on same day. We enjoyed Mt Vesuvius but clearly Pompeii is the one you should choose. I wouldn’t try to do both.
