Tour of the Colosseum

We will be in Rome at the end of our trip in October. I was about to book a tour for our group of 4. The activity level was a 2-step level out of 3. I've had back surgery, but walk 2 miles every day. However, I do have issues with steps. I have to go at a slower pace. I did a chat with the touring company and they said the steps are quite high and you have to keep pace with the group. Is this typically a pretty difficult thing to do?

Why not skip a tour and just enter on your own? ; then you can spend all day at your own pace.
They have audio tours they self which are self guided or Rick Steves made a free audio tour you can play with your phone and self tour.

Unless you want to go underground or after dark I don't see the benefit of taking a tour and you will pay more.

Thank you! That helps me quite a bit. One of the people in our group really wants to go underground and do a full tour, but I may just stay behind and do my own thing with the audio tour. I was just curious as to how strenuous it really is.

I have not done the Underground tour. It is fairly new and I know offered as part of a tour access group only.
It does interest me but for decades folks enjoyed visiting the Colosseum without including an underground tour so don't think you will be missing anything spectacular.

The underground tour has been around for years and is very popular. You can actually see all of the underground areas from above simply by looking down into the corridors that are not covered. There are steps to get to the underground and third tier portions of this tour.

I would just take the regular colosseum tour or rent an audio guide. If a family member wants to visit some underground areas I suggest taking the tour of the Palazzo Valentini. It's a much better tour than the colosseum underground tour.

No, you can only access the Underground and Third Ring with a tour. How to book one of the those through the coopculture website was addressed in one of your previous posts.

The main floor of the Colosseum has an elevator so you can avoid those steep steps going up to the second tier.
