Does it help to take a tour or is using the Rick Steve's podcast almost as good. I think the crowds must be awful and want to know a way to go when there are not so many people (without spending a mint). Does taking a normal tour help this at all?
Melva,
We went in August last year. We split it up in two days. Day 1. We got to St. Peters very early around 7:30 there was no line and we walked right in. We walked around St. Peters using Rick's podcast (it was really nice) then we walked up to the top (again not a long line). After that we went on the Scavi tour (which I made reservations for in advance).
Day 2. I booked a pass the line tour to get into the Vatican. I believe now you can book directly with the Vatican so you don't have to do this. The Vatican Musuem was one of three places on our whole trip that we saw an really long line (Vatican Museum, Colliseum, and Uffizi).
As I said, I think you can book directly with the Vatican now to get into the museum and when you are done with seeing the sistine chapel you can exit directly into St. Peters. Research the site they have information on how to book directly with the Vatican.
We did the Rick Steve's podcast in May. It ROCKED. And was 4 adults, it was nice we could all go out our won pace! :)
