Hi everyone -
We are a family of 8 (6 kids ranging in ages from 22-9 years old) and we will be staying in Naples for part of our trip. We would love to do a tour of Pompeii. Is it worth it to book a full tour picking up up in Naples, or would it be better to make our way to Pompeii (I saw that there aren't any trains from Naples to Pompeii) and find a tour guide at the entrance? Have any of you done something similar? I would love to know your experience. Thanks for any thoughts you could share.
there is a train, the Circumvesuviano commuter train that goes from the lower level of the Naples central train station to Sorrento and stops at Pompeii Scavi -- it drops you right at the entrance. If you have a decent guidebook you don't need a tour BUT there are usually tour guides you can hire there and they have keys to enter some of the locked buildings you will want to see -- we sort of slithered in on the heels of a tour group.
The Circumvesuviana train runs from Naples to Pompeii every half hour and costs about €4. We used Mondo Tours and met our guide at the site.

I strongly recommend a tour guide for Pompeii, it brings it to life.
If you want to join a group tour, have a look at Asko tours. We used them to see both Pompeii and Herculaneum,
Our kids 10 and 13 loved it. This tour can take you on a mini bus from Naples, or you can easily catch the local train.
They might even be able to do a private tour for your group,
Have fun, its a fantastic site.
