We toured the Palatine on our own - using basic info in a tour guide.
In the forum we felt we didn't need a guide - lots of good signage to explain things.
While you are in that area, I recommend that you go across the street and go to the top of the Monumento a Vittorio Emanuele II - also referred to as the "wedding cake building" take the glass elevator to the top and you have a great 360 degree view of Rome. We spent a bit of time up there and enjoyed seeing where things are located in Rome. Happy Travels.
