Which are the best cities to tour a cheese factory?
Any hints on any particular area? France has numerous great cities and towns for different cheeses. Or, you could visit Laurent DuBois great cheese shop in Paris and try them all (they don't wrap the cheeses on display). In Italy, you have Parma. Parma Reggiano has tours. You have the region of Lazio for Pecorino-Romano. Gosh do we now cover the Swiss, Emmenthaler and Gruyere cheeses in Switzerland or the cheddars and stiltons in England? Or, are we talking about airag in Mongolia or goutu in Swaziland (cow's milk mixed with goat's milk)? Are we talking cow, sheep, goat, camel or yak? Check out www.cheese.com and you can see the different cheeses for most countries of the world.
Parma! They are offered free by the Parmigiano-Reggiano consortium and in English. You can take a taxi from town to the dairy (it was about 12 euros), it starts about 8am or a bit later and they are in english. It's amazing, truly one of the more memorable travel experiences I've had.
Tillamook Oregon. Includes samples and everything. A lovely shop. They also make fabulous ice cream and fudge. All made from milk produced without growth hormones. And extra bonus, Tillamook is very close to the lovely Oregon coast, and only an hours drive from Portland.
Sorry I didn't specify Italy. Thanks for the great info!
Anne, in or near Paestum you can find mozzarella farms.
