My tour includes 2 nights in Sorrento.. But do I really need to buy a side excursion for Capri?? I was warned that tour companies make a lot of money out of over priced excursions.. Any suggestions? Michelle Campbell Valrico FL
You can get there on your own via ferry. Once you're there, you can wander without guides too - it's heavenly just to stroll the alleys and overlooks! But probably not worth it if you're overpaying for the blue grotto boats, etc. PS. Anacapri is less expensive and just as pretty, so it's a great alternative.
2 nights isn't much, but if you want to visit Capri, it is easy to catch a ferry from Sorrento - there are numerous departures every day. Capri is great but it is one of the more expensive places to visit in Italy. If you have the time, take the bus up to Anacapri and stroll around there for a few hours. A bit less touristed than Capri. The Casa Rossa is an interesting place to visit as well. Also, you can take the chairlift (10 Euros) up to Mount Solaro for a great view over all of Capri. The Blue Grotto is a lot of fun. If you take the bus there from Anacapri, you save about 9 Euros compared to taking the boat from Capri.

I saw the video of Capri and the Blue Grotto TO be honest it scared me.. I do not do well in closed spaces.. I heard that Capri is very expensive.. Are there other places near Sorrento to explore for 2 days? After seeing video if Naples I have no desire to go there either. I would love a day at the beach or some snorkeling after many days of sightseeing on tour in Rome and Tuscany.. Would like a chance to wind down more than a place to just spend more money. The whole idea of going Rick Steve style is to go through the back door and not overspend. I do this very well in the Caribbean, a 3 dollar tip to a local there gets you many places.. but Italy is a whole new place to me. Michelle Campbell Valrico FL
We liked Capri, especially Anacapri; however, with such a limited amount of time, I'd put it on my "future trip" list. There are several options you can do on your own for daytripping from Sorrento: Ravello (my favorite on the Amalfi Coast), Amalfi, Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Paestum come to mind. Some people would add Positano to the list; but if you're not staying there, there's little of interest, mostly touristy shops. Sorrento, itself is worth a day, if your tour doesn't include a guided visit. Those grottoes, Blue and Emerald, seem to me to be quintessential overpriced tourist traps.
