Trying to decide on best tour company to use in Rome. We are a family of 5 (3 kids age 15, 14, 12) and would like to get a tour of the Vatican, Colosseum and Catacombs, not all in one day.
Use Angel Tours because they give discounts for kids. A tour is included with admission to the catacombs, you cannot walk around on your own.
We did a tour by bus. It was called Christian Tours. It is 15 euro and goes all around the city. You can catch the bus in the front of Termini Station. It's a "hop on, hop off" bus.
Our splurge last summer was a tour of the Colosseum, forum and palatine hill with Context. Our kids were 12 and 14 at the time. Their small group tours are usually 6 people, I think, but we arranged a tour for just our family (a small tour was not available the day we wanted it). The tour was expensive, but we all loved it. Context asks you about your group and tries to match you with a tour guide. Our guide had grown up in Rome, studied in the US so her English was great, is an archaeologist, and is herself a mom, so related well to our kids.
Look in RS Italy book, and find the reference to Francesca. You can contact her directly, I think. She made the ruins come alive...and your kids would love her
We used Presto Tours for 2 tours. By far the best tours that I have ever been on. Request Ryan if he is available. We mainly chose them because their website is so easy to access and we got the vip tickets for no lines.
We also took a tour of the Vatican with Presto in early April of this year. Well worth it as our guide Maya was brilliant.
we enjoyed angel tours, good luck :):)
