My husband and I are contemplating a visit to Northern Italy/Lake District for 2010. I would appreciate any recommendations for reputable private guides/drivers.

You didn't specify where in the Northern Italy/Lake District? For Lake Como, a driver doesn't make sense because Lake Como is not experienced by driving, the primary experience to be had is traversing the lake by ferry and in the lakeside towns. You won't need a guide for that. If you meant other areas of Northern Italy, let us know and we'll try to advise you further.

Sorry to confuse. I did mean the other areas. We have not fully thought through an exact itinerary. This is a work in progress.
