Tour guide recommendations for whirlwind visit to Vatican/Classical Rome sites

I am looking for a private tour on Monday, June 1. I will be in Rome with my 4 children (ages 22, 19,19,17) and my sister will be arriving from Florence with her husband and 3 children (ages 17, 14 11) on Monday AM. She has not booked her train ticket yet but will be returning to Florence that evening. There would be 10 of us in all.

We would like to tour the Vatican and Classical Rome sites in one day. I know that it will be tiring, but it is all the time that our trips overlap that would allow for us to do this together. We don’t need to see everything at the Vatican, but want to see highlights of museum, Sistine Chapel and St Peter’s Basilica. Then of course the classic Rome sites including Colosseum, Forum, Pantheon. We want our kids to really understand what they are seeing since they all have classical educations.

We think a private tour would be the best. Any recommendations who could work with us considering the short time frame and number of students/kids?

You are wise to take this approach. A private guide can really tailor things to YOUR needs. I can recommend Sonia Tavoletta, [email protected] for all of Roma. If she is already booked, she will recommend someone. She is in the network of the famous Francesca Caruso, who is very hard to book these days as Rick Steves' has her engaged so much.

I was in Rome last April with friends and we used Cecilia Proverbio. She speaks English, very knowledgeable and has a good sense of humor. We reached her by email [email protected]. Her phone number is +39 34942011436.

We used Danielle Hunt of Mirabilia Urbis Tours and flat out LOVED her. She's smart, personable and engaging.
She graduated magna cum laude in Classics from UNC- Chapel Hill with a year in Rome studying Roman archaeology and ancient history at the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies. She completed her M.A. at the Vatican School of Paleography, Diplomatics, and Archivism. Daniella thinks her visits are a success with adults and kids alike because, as she says, "While I'm an eternal student, I also love teaching. And of course I'm passionate about the city of Rome and Italy in general: its art, history, literature, and culture...My visits are organized to be educational and fun. I want my customers to experience the city of Rome and fall head-over-heels in love with it."

Pinocchio Tours will be very good at getting your younger group members involved, while still keeping things interesting for everyone else. We have used them in Rome and Pompeii with kids and they are fantastic.
