We are going on a Mediterranean Cruise in September and will arrive for one day in Catania, Sicily. We were wondering if you have any recommendations for a tour guide in that area? We bought the Rick Steves Mediterranean Cruise Ports but there was nothing on Sicily. Any must see items would also be appreciated. Thank you
I went on a Rick Steves tour of Sicily last year and it was wonderful. Our guide was Tommaso Pante - here is his website: http://www.sunway.it/. I don't know if he works in that area - if not, I imagine he'd be willing to recommend someone.
Don't miss the fish market in Catania. It's quite colorful and lively.
Thanks for the information on the guide. I am going to contact him about hiring for our one day and also thanks for the fish market tip.
An enthusiastic second for Tomasso, a wonderful guy, native Sicilian and very experienced, English-speaking guide for Sicily and beyond. He is from Messina, quite close to Catania, and knows EVERYBODY in that area. I highly recommend a visit to Taormina, and in Catania, to the excellent small museum dedicated to the Allied liberation of Sicily in 1943, an aspect of World War II that I knew absolutely nothing about until spending an hour or so in that museum.
