Tour Companies the do day tours of Venice

Any recommendations on a tour company that runs a nice walking tour of Venice? We'll be staying in Bologna and I'm thinking of taking the train to Venice for the day. I have the RS Italy book (and will most likely get the Venice book). Would I do just as well to take the book and wander, or would an organized tour make better use of my limited time? Any companies that you'd recommend?

Depends on your interests. I've had really good luck with Context Travel (in several cities/countries). You could check their Venice offerings on the web. I took a couple of their Venice tours and they were great, but they were quite specialized (since I spent more than a week in Venice, I had time for that). I believe they also offer walks that are more "overview".

Viatour is a consolidator of tours. You can get them cheaper by booking the tours yourself with the individual companies. There are lots of listings and reviews on Trip Advisor as well as reviews on the Graffiti Wall and on the Guide Book Feedback section here on RS.

I am one who always think that the live guide adds a lot to any sightseeing. Second, we have always had very good luck with hitting the TI and signing up for any tours available. Rarely arrange tours in advance simply because we try for max flexibility as we travel.
