Tour of (and buying) Carrara Marble

I would like to do a side trip to Cararra to take a tour of the marble mining, as well as price a piece for a fireplace mantle.

Does anyone have a tour recommendation and/or any tips for who to talk to about purchasing a block (besides reminding me how expensive it’ll be. lol)?

Grazie.

Carrara marble is routinely imported to the states at the wholesale level , and in quantity . For your specific needs , especially in a major city like Pittsburgh , your local stone dealer and fabricators will easily be able to fill your needs . Attempting to ship a single fabricated piece from Italy will be a nightmare , to say the least , aside from the extreme difficulty of locating a dealer willing to pursue this . Any quarry you might visit will undoubtedly have no interest in this sort of transaction .

Thank you, both. And special thanks for the great tour recommendation link. I will enjoy seeing where the mining is done, create that tangable connection, and find a local vendor in or around Pittsburgh who can order some for me. Grazie!

Sara Paolini, the Carrara guide listed in Rick's Italy guidebooks, is excellent. If you won't have a car, Carrara is easy to reach on your own by train and Sara could probably meet you at the train station.

Sara Paolini has not been reachable for some years, according to several posts of the RS forum.

Typically your local marble supplier would fabricate your piece according to specifications from a slab of marble you select. The term Carrara marble, as you may see on your tour, has great variety from pure white to white with dark gray swirls to grey with white swirls.

Interesting. I don't recall having read any such posts, so I did a search which returned no posts saying Sara is unreachable. Sad if she's no longer doing tours of Carrara, as she was great at it.
