We have several days in southern Puglia in September. We're seeing Bari, Matera, Lecce..... but we have 1 afternoon open. Would you recommend Gallipoli or Otranto?

That's a tough one but I would vote for.......
Gallipoli.

Me too. But just be aware that many towns in southern Puglia close down in the afternoon and you may have trouble finding food. So eat/drink whenever you get the chance. We did find gelato in Gallipoli around 3 pm so that was a nice surprise.

We stayed in Otranto for four days in 2012 and really enjoyed it. We did a day trip from there to Gallipoli, had lunch by the ocean but did not see much of the town. We then drove back to Otranto along the coastal road, stopping for a swim along the way. Don't think you could go wrong with either destination!
