Torn between an extra day in Rome or move on Florence and Milan for a day!?!

Hello! My husband and I will be in Europe for 10 days and we're ending our trip with Italy. We arrive in Rome on a Thursday morning, we will be enjoying Thursday and Friday in Rome but I'm torn with what to do on Saturday. We fly out on Sunday morning from Milan and have booked a hotel near the airport so no matter what we have to be in Milan on Saturday night. Anyways, I'm trying to decide if we should enjoy another day in Rome on Saturday and take the late train to Milan....take an early train to Florence, enjoy Florence, then a late train to Milan....or take an early train to Milan and spend the entire day/night in Milan?? I've always heard great things about Florence but not much about Milan. But I'm sure spending more time in Rome would be nice as well. I would just like some thoughts on what others would do! :)

Thanks!!

I went through the same agony our first trip to Italy! One day in Florence will probably frustrate you as there's so much to do! And if you are traveling in high season, the crowds are intense making the city more challenging. Save Florence for a time when you can spend three nights/two full days.

Two days is barely a good start in Rome. Why not enjoy another day here, taking a train about 16:00 to Milan, arriving in time for dinner? Or, if you want to see The Last Supper, get reservations late in the afternoon, early evening, take a mid-morning train to Milan, have lunch, see the Duomo, see the Last Supper, and call it a day. We did the latter our first trip and enjoyed that last day with a small agenda. We stayed right by the Duomo and took a train to the airport in time for our 10:30 flight.

I agree with Laurel - plan to return for Florence. Having a brief itinerary in Milan is a good idea. Or spend a little more time in Rome.

Thanks for you responses!!! We've decided no Florence (for now) and we'll play it by ear about Milan!

There is quite enough in Milan, even without the Last Supper, to fill up a day. The Duomo is special, skip the rather un-special interior, and go up to the roof to wander around - there's nothing like it. Right next door is the first indoor shopping mall, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, and after you've walked through it you're only a few meters from La Scala. If you still have time, there's the Sforza Castle just a few minutes' walk away.

I think a day in MIlan may be a better idea, just because it is different. Also, the odds are you'll be back in Italy and back in Rome. The odds on returning to Milan aren't nearly as high.
