I was in Turin in 1998, so take this into account on the following. I stayed at the Hotel Roma and Rocca Cavour http://www.romarocca.it/eng/hotel.html. It's on the park just north of the train station (Porta Nuova). It's an old "train station hotel" from the days when train travel was glamorous. The hotel was the epitome of "slightly dilapidated grandeur"; somewhat worn, but definitely with a feel of a more genteel time. I was in the fanciest kind of room (they have three grades) and it was HUGE, like the size of a large US motel room (definitely one of the largest rooms I've stayed in anywhere, as I stay in singles and most are tiny). The location was very convenient, and my room overlooked the park which was pretty (rather than seedy as I was afraid of). And best of all, because Turin is a business city rather than a tourist city, I got a weekend rate which was dirt cheap. Looking quickly at their website price list, I see they still have good weekend rates. The breakfast was skimpy and cost extra, but got the job done (it included a boiled egg, so it was not just continental). I have no idea what the place is like now, but if I were to return to Turin (and I enjoyed my stay there very much), I'd start by looking at this hotel.
