Torino

We plan to overnight in Torino(family business)in-between Florence and Cinque Terre in August. Any recommendations on a hotel, say <100 euro, a short walk from train station? I think train to CT leaves from Linoretto and from Florence it's Porta Susa. How to go between stations?

Thank you, Robert. Had I been smart enough to open up the intermediate stops on the train schedule, I would likely have seen the common thread of Porta Nouva. And, yes, I did mean "Lin..." something. Lingotto, but I though "Linoretto" sounded pretty cool. So I will change to "hotels in the area of Porta Nouva" in case anyone else has some ideas.

I hate to tell you Bob, but Torino is no where close to being in between Florence and the C/T. It's northwest of Milan up on the Swiss border.
You should fly into Torino or even Milan and fly out of another city open jaw to avoid backtracking.

I understand that your Torino stop is between Florence and CT timewise. I have traveled between the train stations in Torino by Taxi. The stations are across town from each other. I think there is a bus connection, but couldn't figure out how to use it.

Fly into Malpensa, which is not far from Turin. do your business in Turin first, Go to the Cinque Terre from Turin, then after the 5Terre, go to Florence. Fly out of Florence.
Or do the exact reverse itinerary. Turin is not between Florence and the Cinque Terre. If you do Turin in between, you are back tracking.

Itinerary aside, I'm still interested in a hotel recommendation, <100 euro, short walking distance from Porta Susa or Linoretto?

First of all I've never heard of Linoretto, maybe you meant Lingotto or I don't know what.
Second of all the most important station in Turin is Torino Porta Nuova and all trains originate from there. Porta Susa is a station where trains stop on the way to Milan. Lingotto is another station where trains stop on the way to Genoa. In any case they all originate from Torino Porta Nuova, therefore that is the area where you should stay, although Porta Susa is not that far. The area of Porta Nuova has a lot of hotels since it's right on the middle of the city center just a few blocks from Piazza San Carlo, which is the most famous piazza of Turin. I have no recent experience of hotels in Turin, but I'm sure you can find a lot at any price in that area on any online search engine.

I was last in Torino about 15 years ago, but I enjoyed my stay at the Roma and Rocca Cavour, right on the piazza next to Porta Nova (not the main piazza Roberto mentioned, but quite close). It's a train station hotel from the time when those were fancy, and in the late 1990's had a bit of faded grandeur that was fun. And, the largest rooms (there are 3 sizes) are quite large, meaning American hotel room size rather not European hotel room size. They also have substantial discounts on weekends. http://www.romarocca.it/eng/hotel.html Normally, I wouldn't post anything about a 15 year old hotel stay (whether it was good or bad), but since few on this Helpline seem to have advice on Torino, I figure it's better than nothing.
