We will be in Torino visiting family for a few days, then driving back toward Milan, our departure city. Does anyone have experience in that area and suggest any particular villages/sights on the way toward Lake Como?
Lake Maggiore is more or less between Torino and the Milan Malpensa airport (actually closer to the airport). I would stay in Stresa, on lake Maggiore, for at least 3 nights, although 4 would be better since there is so much to see in that area.
I took a day trip to from Torino to Lago Maggiore. It's beautiful, but the center is small and it was really crowded. You might consider Verona for a night or two.
I agree with Roberto. I love the Lake Maggiore area of Italy. I have stayed in Stresa, Baveno and Cannobio on different trips. Lots to see and do. Boat rides on the lake. Can do a combo train/boat day trip. Quiet, small villages...beautiful scenery (Swiss Alps in background). You can PM me if you want hotel/restaurant recommendation.
How is Verona between Torino and Malpensa airport? On which map?
