Researching apartments to rent in Rome for short visit. Ideally, we want to stay where locals live and not in the heart of loud, crowded tourist area. (We certainly plan to see all the great sites, but just want to experience living in an authentic neighborhood for a few nights.)
Any recommendations of neighborhoods that you love? I am looking in Trestavere for starters... We are happy to do a lot of walking and exploring, but don't want to be too far away from everything either.
Thanks for any advice.
Romans live in all neighborhoods, including the ones full of tourists.
Trastevere is nice. Prati is also nice, a bit to the north of the Vatican.

And the Romans can be just as noisy as the tourists! :O)
We decided on Trastevere, it seems more "homey". Also, it is recommended a lot here.
Having lived in Rome for several years, I find Trastevere overly-touristed with some of the worst restaurants in the city. If you have to be around tourists, you might as well be near Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, or Campo de' Fiori.
I recommend Prati as a more residential place, with more local-occupied apartments. It is a quieter area with great transportation options including tram, Metro, and bus. It is just north of the Vatican. Try for the Piazza Mazzini area, north of Viale delle Milizie.
Beware of staying too far out. For example, I lived in Parioli and while it is lovely and less-touristed, it can take a long time to get to-and-from the sights you want to see (except for Galleria Borghese).
We've stayed in the Prati area and enjoyed it very much. While it's "Roman" residential, a lot of the tourists don't make it up that way. Lots of bars and restaurants, and close to metro stations if not much of a walker, although we walked all over Rome from up there.
