Too warm for jeans/ too cold for skirts?

I'm leaving for Florence and Rome in two weeks. Will I be too hot in jeans during the day? Will I be too cold in skirts in the evenings? I'm trying to pack and I'm struggling. Also, if a skirt is knee length but doesn't cover my knees, will I be allowed into churches? Thanks for any advice!

If the skirt hits the top of the knee, you will be fine. However, I would not chance it at the Vatican or San Marco in Venice. These two churches are more strict on dress code enforcement. Many wear jeans in Italy. You can consider Capri pants as an alternative. You can get a weather travel forecast online based on past years to see for yourself whether or not jeans will be too hot.

I've been to Florence and Rome twice in October. , I would find jeans too hot during the day, but probably fine at night, especially if eating outside. I found capris during the day to be perfect. Your shoes can be a bit more comfortable (not necessarily what I'd wear with a skirt), your knees will be covered, and you can layer your top. I usually wear a very light , short sleeve top (like a "burn-out" fabric) and use a light shirt (sometimes open) to wear as a layer over. Not as heavy as a jacket, and is very light to throw in my day bag. We are going again in a few weeks, and I'll be wearing the same.

Have a great time!

pS... Google "live webcam Rome", and you'll find webcams at tourist places, such as the pantheon, and you'll be able to scope out the weather and what people are wearing.

If you don't want to pack two sets of pants -- capris for day and jeans for night -- here's what i do. I pack only capris for day and also pack black knee-hi stretch nylon socks and wear those with the capris at night, the socks cover the legs for a bit of warmth, and dress up the capris for an evening out! The socks come in a variety of designs and are quite beautiful with capris, and they weigh nearly nothing, adding virtually no weight to your luggage! Plus they wash up fast and dry fast!

I don't travel with jeans as I find them too uncomfortable and they take up a lot of room in my suitcase and are hard to hand wash and dry. What I do for temperature variation is just add a pair of tights to my skirts. I have regular cotton tights for slightly cooler weather and then polar fleece lined ones for cooler days. They take up almost no space.

I find lighter weight jeans with a more breezy top fine for moderate weather - like the averages in October. This depends on your internal thermostat, and if you hit a heat wave. If your top is sleeveless have a cardigan or scarf for churches.

A dress with bare legs can be made warmer with a cardigan or scarf or ankle booties. I bring flats (Clarks ballet flats) that make the jeans cooler - socks or heavy shoes make you really hot. And I bring leather booties - ankle - that dress up jeans at night, and warm up a dress.

I will also do a knee length dress with or without tights. Some of my favorite travel dresses are about an inch or less above the knee. This has been fine in churches in Spain, not sure about Italy. Tights or leg warmers can be pulled on if needed.

Basically medium temps make this kind of mixing and matching useful. Be creative!

Sadly, the weather is unpredictable. However, I can't imagine being cold in Italy in early October. In fact, I'd book rooms with AC, and take a sun hat and sunscreen and sandals. Instead of jeans, I'd take a pair of capris.

I always now just travel in jeans. I'm comfortable in my jeans at home, so I travel in them as well. I roll the cuff up, so there you go "capri" pants. I brought a GAP dress with me this trip (currently in France) but haven't worn it yet...waste of space in my suitcase.

We were in Italy in May this year, and it was COLD and rainy. I wore my jeans every day. Currently in France, it's cool as well, and it was rainy and COLD yesterday.

I've been in Florence, Rome, Venice in past years in late September ,early October and late October, and jeans were fine then too.

so - if you love your jeans, and wear them at home, take them with you

We were in Florence in early October last year and I was comfortable in jeans and other long pants during the day. I get hot very easily and I don't remember being hot. Some days I wore a light sweater over my top, other days I didn't need it.

I always bring at least one pair of jeans. I do what Ellen does, roll them up for Capri length or down for more warmth. Jeans don't have to be washed often unless you spill on yourself. I was in Italy the first 3 weeks of May this year and there were times I was downright cold. I wore long pants as opposed to capri's most of the time.

What terrific ideas! Tights under skirts if needed, and jeans for comfort and warmth if you already enjoy wearing them at home! Good sense! If you like wearing jeans at home, they will serve you well anywhere! Wear what makes you comfy!
