Too Late?

Is it too late to book flights and hotels for Rome and Tuscany for June 17-30? We've finally got the go ahead to go, but I'm having trouble finding places to stay for a family of 5.

Juli,, it is very hard to find any hotel room that will accept five people in a room(its hard even for families of 3 or 4), in any Europeon country.. you will need to look for either two rooms, or consider renting an apartment.

Even if you found a hotel room with such a large room , its gone by now.
But,, nothing is impossible, I am sure with the volcano there are people cancelling out on things,, so you may hit it lucky.

Good luck,, I think June is a nice time for Italy.

Thanks.

That doesnt sound very positive. Any last minute apartment suggestion in Rome or Tuscany?

What's not positive? You asked a question and you received the answer. 5 bedded hotel rooms are difficult to find. If you want a hotel then look for 2 rooms. Else, look for an apartment. That's actually a big help to you because now you know the answer.

There are lots of hotel/apartment web search sites. We used www.sleepinitaly.com for our Rome apartment in Piazza del Paradisio which is a wonderful location. The best locations are in the historical center of Rome - Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Campe dei Fiori, etc.

One of the easiest search facilities for users is www.venere.com Try putting in your dates for Rome and specify 5 people. Good luck...and it's not too late until June 18 :-)

Juli, try the bed and breakfast association in Rome, they we're very helpful, they might be able to find you an apartment in Rome. www.b-b.rm.it/

I strongly suggest to look for appartments instead of hotel rooms. Most likely, you'll get more room for less money and will have more options at this time of year. Check out the website below. It got lots of options. We booked a place in Tuscany through them on short notice as well.

We booked this one below through interchalet, but you can book directly with them as well (does require a car, the owners speak little English but their son does and helps out with communication when he's around)

We will be in Italy during that same time! We are a family of 4, and I found that apartments are definitely the way to go. I found ours through sites like

www.knowital.com and VRBO, and I cross-checked with reviews on SlowTrav:

Many vacation apartments rent by the full week, often from Saturday to Saturday. You could make that work for you by renting in Tuscany from 19 June to the 26, and then finding one in Rome from the 26th on. (That won't be a full week, but you can always ask for a shorter term.)

And don't expect to find anything around Siena that second week--the Palio on July 2 will means things will be booked up for days before that event.

It may take some research time, but I'm sure you'll fid something that will work for your family.

Thanks again.

So here's another question. Where's a nice little town to stay near Siena so that we can do day trips to Siena, Florence, Pisa and Lucca or any other great places to stay? I'd like a place the kids can walk to the market and be a bit entertained by. We would do the day trips, too.

Will you have a car? That would give you more optioss.

We could rent a car. It seems like it would be easier to have a car if we were to do day trips to Siena, Pisa, Florence and/or Lucca...right?

Hi Julie,

It's never too late to plan a trip like this! :) Last year I decided on August 24th that I was going on a Rick Steves tour and then staying for another two weeks after......I was on a plane to Paris on August 28th. It was one of the best trips of my life.

As for a family place to stay in Italy; I would look at Agriturismos. Many of them have family apartments, pools, bikes, horseback riding, cooking classes, and many other things to do. The offerings vary by agriturismo. If you go to Graffiti Wall there is an entire section on agriturismos in Italy. Also try http://www.slowtrav.com/

Have a fantastic time! :)
