Will be traveling the autostrada from Rome to Chianti and would like to know how much the tolls are at each toll plaza. I know we will not be able to use our credit card. Just want to be prepared with enough euro change, etc.
It depends on the distance you drive between toll booths. It's not a set amount at each toll. You can most certainly use a credit card. Unmanned booths will take them. If you go to an attended booth they may or may not take them. You can also use bills, not just change.
It's the NJ Turnpike. Get on, get a ticket. Get off, pay the ticket. No HoJo, but who cares, Autogrill is far better. I never put my credit card into any machine that may not give it back without an intercontinental bureaucratic struggle (Italian ATM on a Sunday, an Autostrada toll booth, whatever). I drive to the far right booth and there is always a human ("always"?: so far so good) who takes cash and gives change. Done deal, happy motoring. http://www.slowtrav.com/italy/driving/autostrada.htm
Have never had a prob with the card being eaten but can understand that. I will say though that I've come across a few unmanned points. Usually smaller towns and sometimes you can see there is a booth meant for that but it's closed.
viamichelin.com also give fairly close toll costs for different routes,
'Get on, get a ticket. Get off, pay the ticket.' Nope. Some segments have a fixed toll and there's no ticket. 'drive to the far right booth and there is always a human' Nope. Sometimes the far right lane is for maintance vehicles, etc. Go to the lane that has an icon of a person accepting money.
Nope. Some segments have a fixed toll and there's no ticket. Good point. Ran into that going into Naples....unexpected and I freaked out for a few seconds trying to find a ticket I never got.
The amount depends on how far you've driven. A couple of exits (they're much further apart than typical US turnpikes) is in the ballpark of a few Euros. Your US credit card will work just fine at the toll booths. We found that the Italians like to use cash more than cards, so the lines at the card lanes was usually far shorter. The lowest toll we paid going around Florence was about 1.20 Euros. We paid with a US capital one Mastercard, no problem.
Thank you for your advice. Will try using my Cap 1 card for tolls.
Camille, regarding the response, "drive to the far right booth and there is always a human"...... I would definitely advise not to do this, but instead, read the signs above the toll booths. At the first toll plaza we came to after exiting the rental car lot at the Florence airport, the far right booth was definitely unmanned and reserved for maintenance vehicles only (or those with a special pass). Buon viaggio!
As others have stated, the tolls vary depending upon how far you drive. Last June, we drove 1600 miles throughout northern Italy and always used our credit card without any problems. Buon Viaggio! :)
One example : If you need a ballpark amount refer to this. We just drove from Mantova Sud to Venice and paid 10.50 euros. So measure the distance and you'll have an idea. Drive safe and avoid the left lane if you want to take your time.
I'm not sure there's a uniform cost per distance, but we make sure we have cash at the rate of five euro per hundred kilometers plus a slight cushion and have never come up short.
Just a gee wiz thing.....I drive to Vicenza on a regular basis....A14,A13 A4 to Vicenza est exit....costs 14.40.....went to Verona couple of weeks ago to the Verona sud exit which is the same route but another 25 mins down the A4....cost was 13.30....still can't figure that out!
